What is the population of the world. What happens when the world's population stops growing? Where do most people live

There are more than 200 states on planet Earth (including partially recognized and unrecognized countries).

All of them differ in terms of living standards, incomes of the population, cultural development and other important indicators.

In this situation, it is natural that the number of inhabitants of the countries of the globe varies significantly.

Against the background of states with a huge number of inhabitants, there are countries where literally several thousand people live.

common data

According to various estimates, 7.444-7.528 billion people live on planet Earth. The population is constantly growing by about 90 million people.

But the distribution of inhabitants across the planet is extremely uneven. More than 1/3 of all mankind lives in China and India, and 2/3 of the world's inhabitants live in the 15 most populous countries.

For comparison, we present in the table information about the population of the planet in different periods of human development:

Note. Data in 1500 and earlier are obtained by scientific evaluation. At that time, accounting and census were not yet involved.

Main characteristics

The population of each country is taken into account, both by local authorities and by the international scientific community.

In this case, data obtained as a result of censuses, migration records, etc. are used. In some states, it is almost impossible to accurately estimate the number of inhabitants.

This is hindered by military conflicts, and also part of the population of some countries lives in extremely inaccessible areas.

Consider how much the population of the earth is by state for 2020 in the following table:

Leading countries

Most people live in China and India. In total, more than 2.740 billion people live in these two states.

Occupying 3rd place in terms of the number of inhabitants, the United States lags behind any of these countries very significantly, because only 325.719 million people live in them.

In Russia, which is in 9th place, even significantly fewer people live - 146.880 million people.

Who's behind

On the political map of the planet, there are also states with a very small number of inhabitants. Least of all people live in the Vatican (less than 850 people).

But this does not mean that a sparsely populated country is an exception to the rule. There are also full-fledged states, where there are literally several thousand people.

For example, only about 10 thousand people live in Tuvalu or Nauru. Less than 50 thousand people live in such states as Palau, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Monaco.

Growth dynamics

For a long time, the number of people on planet Earth was relatively small. It began to grow significantly only in the 19th century, but the real population explosion occurred in the 1960s-1980s.

It is associated with an increase in the availability of quality medical care, a general increase in the standard of living and an undecreasing birth rate in a number of states.

Most of the newborns are in countries such as China, India. Many in the states of Latin America, as well as Africa.

Forecast for the future

Scientists are constantly considering various scenarios for the further development of mankind and changes in the number of inhabitants of the planet.

According to them, by 2020, about 7.7-7.8 billion people will live in the world, and in the future it will only increase.

According to forecasts, by 2030 there will be more than 8.463 billion people on the planet, and by 2050 - already 9.568 billion. In 2100, the population of the Earth can reach 11 billion.

The world population is over 7 billion people. According toThe US Census Bureau's world population surpassed 7 billion on March 12, 2012. The world population reached 7 billion on October 31, 2011, according to the United Nations. In June 2013, the UN estimated the world population at about 7.2 billion people. world population is the total number of people living on earth.Selective translation (Wikipedia article, internal ss pins omitted). The world's population has been continuously growing since the end of the Great Famine of 1315-1317 and the Black Death. (plague epidemic) in the 1350s, when the population was about 370 million people. The highest population growth rates (above 1.8% per year) were seen briefly in the 1950s, and for a longer period during the 1960s and 1970s. The growth rate peaked at 2.2% in 1963, then declined to below 1.1% by 2012. Total annual births peaked at the end of 1980 at around 138,000,000, and currently remains largely constant at 134,000,000 in 2011, while the death rate was 56,000,000 per year and is expected to rise to 80 million per year by 2040.

Current UN projections show a further increase in population in the near future (with a steady decline in population growth), the world's population will be from 8.3 to 10.9 billion by 2050. Some analysts question the sustainability of further world population growth, noting growing pressures on the environment, global food supplies and energy resources.

The population of the Earth by region

Six of the Earth's Seven Continentspermanently populated in large numbers. Asia is the most populated continent, with 4.2 billion inhabitants - more than 60% of the world's population. The population of the two most populous countries in the world is China and India Together they make up about 37% of the world's population. Africa is the second largest continent in terms of the number of inhabitants, with a population of about 1 billion people, or 15% of the world's population. Europe with a population of 733,000,000 people makes up 11% of the world's population, while in Latin America and Caribbean the region is home to about 600,000,000 (9%). ATNorth America, mainly inUnited States and Canada about 352,000,000 (5%) live, and Oceania - the least populated region, has about 35 million inhabitants (0.5%).

Population in the countries of the world in our time

During the European agricultural and industrial revolutions, the life expectancy of children increased dramatically. From 1700 to 1900, the population of Europe increased from 100 million to 400 million. In general, in 1900, 36% of the world's population lived in Europe.
Population growth in Western countries accelerated after the introduction of compulsory vaccination and improvements in medicine and sanitation. After a qualitative change in living conditions and improved health care during the 19th century, the population of Great Britain began to double every fifty years. by 1801, population of Englandgrew to 8.3 million, and by 1901 it reached 30.5 million, the population of the United Kingdom reached 60 million in 2006.In the US, the population will increase from 5.3 million in 1800 to 106 million in 1920, and will exceed 307 million in 2010.
First half of the 20th century in Russia and the Soviet Union was marked by a series of wars, famines and other disasters, each accompanied by large-scale population losses. Stephen J. Lee believes that by the end of World War II in 1945, Russia's population was 90 million fewer than it might have been. Russia's population has declined significantly in recent decades, from 148 million in 1991 to 143 million in 2012, but as of 2013, that decline appears to have stopped.
Many countries in the developing world have experienced rapid population growth over the past century. China's population grew from about 430 million in 1850 to 580 million in 1953 and is now over 1.3 billion. The population of the Indian subcontinent, which was about 125 million in 1750, reached 389,000,000 in 1941. Today, about 1.6 billion people live in India and adjacent countries. The population of Java has increased from five million in 1815 to over 130 million at the beginning of the 21st century. The population of Mexico has grown from 13.6 million in 1900 to 112 million in 2010. During the 1920s-2000s, Kenya's population grew from 2.9 million to 37 million.

Cities ("urban areas") with at least one million inhabitants as of 2006. Only 3% of the world's population lived in cities in 1800, this share increased to 47% by 2000 and was 50.5% in 2010. By 2050, the share could reach 70%.Image Source,

Planet Earth is home to many living beings, the main of which is man.

How many people inhabit the planet

The world population today is almost seven and a half billion people. The peak value of its growth was noted in 1963. Currently, the governments of some countries are pursuing a restrictive demographic policy, while others are trying to stimulate an increase in the number of people within their borders. However, the general population of the Earth is aging. Young people do not seek to reproduce offspring. The population of planet Earth today has an unnatural bias towards the elderly. This feature will complicate the financial support of pensioners.

According to scientists, by the end of the twenty-first century, the world's population will exchange the eleventh billion.

Where do most people live

In 2009, a wake-up call sounded. The population of the world living in cities has become equal in size to the number of people in villages and rural areas. The reasons for this movement of labor are simple. The people of the world strive for convenience and wealth. Wages in cities are higher and life is easier. Everything will change when the urban population of the world experiences food shortages. Many will be forced to relocate to the provinces, closer to the land.

The world population table is presented as follows: in fifteen countries there are almost five billion people. In total, there are more than two hundred states on our planet.

Most populous countries

The world population can be presented in the form of a table. In this case, the most densely populated countries will be indicated.

Population

Indonesia

Brazil

Pakistan

Bangladesh

Russian Federation

Philippines

Most populous cities

The world population map today already has three cities, the population of which has exceeded twenty million people. Shanghai is one of the largest cities in China, which stands on the Yangtze River. Karachi is a port city in Pakistan. Closes the top three of the Chinese capital - Beijing.

In terms of population density, the main city of the Philippines, Manila, holds the palm. The world population map reports that in some areas this figure reaches seventy thousand people per square kilometer! The infrastructure does not cope well with such an influx of residents. For example: in Moscow, this figure does not exceed five thousand people per square kilometer.

Also, the list of cities with a very high population density includes Indian Mumbai (this settlement was previously called Bombay), the capital of France - Paris, the Chinese autonomy of Macau, the dwarf state of Monaco, the heart of Catalonia - Barcelona, and also Dhaka (Bangladesh), the city-state of Singapore , Tokyo (Japan), and the previously mentioned Shanghai.

Population growth statistics by period

Despite the fact that humanity appeared more than three hundred years ago, for a long time its development was extremely slow. Short life expectancy and extremely difficult conditions affected.

Mankind exchanged the first billion only at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in 1820. A little more than a hundred years passed, and in 1927 the newspapers trumpeted the good news about the second billion earthlings. Just 33 years later, in 1960, they talked about a third.

From this period, scientists began to seriously worry about the boom in the growth of the world's population. But this did not prevent the four billionth inhabitant of the planet from joyfully announcing his appearance in 1974. In 1987, the account went to five billion. The six billionth earthling was born closer to the millennium, at the end of 1999. In less than twelve years, we have become a billion more. At current birth rates, no later than the end of the first quarter of this century, the name of the eight billionth person will appear in the newspapers.

Such impressive successes have been achieved primarily due to a significant reduction in bloody wars that claim millions of lives. Many dangerous diseases were defeated, medicine has learned to significantly prolong the life of people.

Effects

Until the nineteenth century, people had little interest in the population of the world. The term "demography" was introduced only in 1855.

At the moment, the problem is becoming more and more threatening.

In the seventeenth century, it was believed that four billion people could live comfortably on our planet. As real life shows, this figure is significantly underestimated. The current seven and a half billion, with a reasonable distribution of resources, feel relatively comfortable.

Potential settlement opportunities are possible in Australia, Canada, in desert regions. This will require certain forces for improvement, but theoretically it is real.

If we take into account exclusively territorial possibilities, then up to one and a half quadrillion people can be settled on the planet! This is a huge number, which contains fifteen zeros!

But the use of resources and the rapid heating of the atmosphere will very quickly change the climate so much that the planet will become lifeless.

The maximum number of inhabitants on Earth (with moderate requests) should not exceed twelve billion. This figure is taken from food supply calculations. As the population grows, more resources need to be obtained. To do this, we should use more areas for sowing, increase the number of livestock, and save water resources.

But if food problems can be solved relatively quickly, thanks to genetic technologies, then organizing the consumption of clean drinking water is a much more complex and costly undertaking.

In addition, humanity must move to the use of renewable energy sources - wind, sun, earth and water energy.

Forecasts

The Chinese authorities have been trying to solve the problem of overpopulation for decades. For a long time there was a program allowing the appearance of no more than one child in the family. In addition, a powerful information campaign was carried out among the population.

Today we can say that the Chinese succeeded in everything. Population growth has stabilized and is projected to decline. Not the last role was played by the growth factor in the well-being of the inhabitants of the PRC.

As for the poor in India, Indonesia, Nigeria, the prospects are far from rosy. In thirty years, China may lose the "palm" in the demographic issue. The population of India by 2050 may exceed one and a half billion people!

Population growth will only worsen the economic problems of poor nations.

Conducted programs

For a long time people were forced to have a large number of children. Housekeeping required huge forces, and it was impossible to cope alone.

Pension security can help solve the problem of overpopulation.

Also, a well-thought-out social policy and reasonable family planning, as well as an increase in the economic and social status of the beautiful half of humanity, and an increase in the level of education in general, become possible ways to solve the demographic issue.

Conclusion

It is very important to love yourself and your loved ones. But do not forget that the planet on which we live is our common home, which must be treated with respect.

Already today it is worth moderating your needs and thinking about planning so that our descendants can live on the planet as comfortably as we do.

The population of the countries of the world does not belong to constant indicators: somewhere it grows, and in some countries it falls catastrophically. There are many reasons for this - economic, political, social, pressure from other powers. As practice shows, people are constantly looking for a place to live with clean air, developed infrastructure, and social guarantees. Natural growth and decline also affect - the ratio of mortality and fertility, life expectancy, and other significant factors. Previously, experts predicted that the number of people on the globe would certainly exceed critical levels and become uncontrollable. Today's realities show that this is not entirely true.

The population in the world is generally estimated, by continents and superpowers, there are exceptions - the European Union, which unites states with different levels of economy and demography. We should not forget the migration processes activated as a result of military conflicts, as the events in Yugoslavia and Syria have shown. Moreover, the development of the economy does not always accompany an increase in the number of people living in the country, and vice versa, which is proved by the example of India or individual African countries. But first things first. Consider the largest population in the world by country, according to official statistics.

The largest countries by population

Leader in population China- there, according to sociologists, almost 1.4 billion people are concentrated.

In second place India: Indians, compared with the Chinese, are less than 40 million (1.36 billion). These are the countries with the largest population in the world, followed by other numbers - hundreds of millions or less.

The third place is rightfully occupied by USA. There are 328.8 million Americans in the world. After a developed and wealthy America, states that are not similar to each other are breaking forward. These are Indonesia (266.4 million), Brazil (212.9), Pakistan (200.7), Nigeria (196.8), Bangladesh (166.7), Russian Federation (143.3). Closes the top ten Mexico - "only" 131.8 million.

The second ten is opened by island Japan, it is inhabited by 125.7 million citizens. The next participant in the world population ranking is distant Ethiopia (106.9 million). Egypt and Vietnam are not similar in any way, except for the number of citizens living there - respectively 97 and 96.4 million people (14th and 15th place). The Congo has 84.8 million inhabitants, Iran (17th position) and Turkey (18th) have almost the same number of citizens - 81.8 and 81.1 million.

After a prosperous Germany with its 80.6 million law-abiding burghers, another decline is observed in exactly 20: 68.4 million Thais have accumulated in Thailand. Then begins the combined hodgepodge, interspersed with developed European states.

Among other players, the Netherlands (17.1 million), Belgium (81 positions, 11.5 million people) are in 68th place. In total, there are 201 states in the list in the ranking by population of the countries of the world, if viewed in descending order, including the Virgin Islands, which are under the protectorate of the United States (106.7 thousand people).

How many people live on earth

In 2017, the world population was 7.58 billion. At the same time, 148.78 were born, and 58.62 million people died. 54% of the total population lived in cities, and 46%, respectively, in towns and villages. The world population for 2018 was 7.66 billion with a natural increase of 79.36 million. The data is not final, because the year is not over yet.

Traditionally, the "inflow" is provided by states with a low standard of living, which are leaders in the ranking of the world's largest countries in terms of population - China and India. If we take statistics for long periods, it is easy to see that a smooth increase in 1960-1970 (up to 2% annually) gave way to a decline until 1980. Then there was a sharp jump (more than 2%) in the late eighties, after which the rate of increase in numbers began to decline. In 2016, the growth rate was about 1.2%, and now the number of people living on Earth is slowly but surely increasing.

TOP 10 countries with the largest population

Statistics refers to the exact sciences and allows, with minimal errors, to determine fluctuations in the number of citizens permanently residing in a given territory, to make a forecast for the future. Online counters and surveys are designed to take into account any changes as impartially as possible, but they are not without sin.

For example, the UN Secretariat estimated the population of the countries of the world in the past year at 7.528 billion people (06/01/2017), the US Census Bureau operates with an indicator of 7.444 billion (01/01/2018), the independent fund DSW (Germany) believes that as of 01.01. In 2018, there were 7.635 billion inhabitants on the planet. Which number of the 3 given to choose, everyone decides for himself.

Population of the countries of the world in descending order (table)

The population of the countries of the world in 2020 is distributed unevenly among individual states, in accordance with other factors - mortality, fertility, total life expectancy. It is easy to track how the population of the countries of the world changed in 2020 using the following indicators from the table (according to Wikipedia):

Japan and Mexico "fight" for the 10th place, statistical counters place them in the ranking in different ways. In total, there are about 200 hundred participants in the list. Toward the end are island states and protectorates with conditional independence. There is also the Vatican. But their participation in the growth of the population of the countries of the world for 2020 is small - fractions of a percent.

Rating forecast

According to analysts' calculations, in the future, the number of inhabitants of the largest, as well as the dwarf countries of the world, will not change on a global scale: the growth rate for 2020 is determined at about 252 million 487 thousand people. Global changes, according to the tabular characteristics of the population of the countries of the world in 2020, do not threaten any of the states.

The last serious fluctuations, according to the UN, were noted in 1970 and 1986, when the growth reached 2-2.2% per year. After the onset of 2000, demographics show a smooth decline with a small surge in 2016.

The population of European countries

Europe and the union formed in it are going through hard times: the crisis, the influx of refugees from other states, currency fluctuations. These factors inevitably affect the population for 2020 in the EU countries, being an indicator of political and economic processes.

Germany demonstrates enviable stability: 80.560 million citizens live in it, in 2017 there were 80.636 of them, in 2019 there will be 80.475 million. The French Republic and the British Empire have similar figures - 65.206 and 65.913 million. Last year they were at the same level (65), next year in the UK they expect an increase to 66.3 million people.

The number of Italians living in their territories remains unchanged - 59 million. Neighbors have different conditions: some are worse, some are better. It is problematic to track the population of Europe and the world according to the table, because, due to open borders, many citizens move freely around the continent, living in one country and working in another.

Population of Russia

The Russian Federation, if you look at the population data among the countries of the world in descending order in 2020, is confidently in the top ten. According to one think tank, there will be 160,000 fewer Russians in 2020. Now there are 143.261 million. It is necessary to take into account the combination of regions with different densities, and there are enough of them in Russia (Siberia, the Urals, the Far East and the Far North).

Earth population density

The indicator of population density of the countries of the world does not depend on the area of the occupied territory, but indirectly affects the assessment of the situation. In close positions, there are both developed powers (Canada, the USA, Scandinavian), in which certain areas are not inhabited, and representatives of the third world with a critical standard of living. Or the microstate of Monaco, which demonstrates high density (due to the minimum area occupied by the territory).

Why is density important?

Density determines the ratio of area and population of the countries of the civilized world, as well as other states. It is not identical to the number or standard of living, but characterizes the development of infrastructure.

There are no clearly defined territories with "normalized" density. More often, a situation with an abrupt change from a metropolis to a suburb or across climatic regions is observed. In fact, this is the ratio of the number of people to the area on which they permanently live. Even in the largest countries in the world in terms of population (China and India), there are sparsely populated (mountainous) areas adjacent to densely populated ones.

Countries with the highest and lowest population densities

As in every ranking, there are leaders and outsiders. Density is not tied to the number of settlements, the number of citizens living there, or the rating of the country. An example of this is densely populated Bangladesh, an agrarian power with an economy dependent on developed countries, where there are no more than 5 megacities with a population of a million people.

Therefore, the list includes polar players in terms of economic indicators. Among the states of Europe and the world, the Principality of Monaco occupies the first place: 37.7 thousand people in an area of 2 square kilometers. In Singapore, with a population of 5 million, the density is 7,389 people per square kilometer. The Vatican, with its specific administrative division, can hardly be called a state, but it is also on the list. Steppe Mongolia is the least populated, completing the list: 2 inhabitants per unit area.

Table: population, area, density

The tabular form of estimating the population by countries of the world is accepted as illustrative and accessible for perception. Positions are distributed as follows:

There are 195 countries on the list in total. Belgium - 24 positions, after Haiti (341 inhabitants per square kilometer), Great Britain - 34 (255).

Russia population density

The Russian Federation ranks 181, behind neighboring Ukraine (100) and Belarus (126). Russia has a density of 8.56, while other Slavic states have 74 (Ukraine) and 46 (Belarus). At the same time, in terms of the territory occupied by the Russian Federation, it is far ahead of both powers.

At the beginning of 2016, headlines on the Internet greeted users with the message that the world population on January 1, 2016 would be more than 7.3 billion people. So, as of the end of March 2016, there were 7.32 (7.39) billion people on earth. English-language sources, in contrast to Russian-language sources, calculate a smaller number.

The population of planet Earth for 2016

The most populous countries in the country

  1. China - 1.3 billion people;
  2. India - 1.2 billion hours;
  3. United States - 323.9 million hours;
  4. Indonesia - 258.3 million hours;
  5. Brazil - 205.8 million hours;
  6. Pakistan - 201.9 million hours;
  7. Nigeria - 186 million hours;
  8. Bangladesh - 171.6 million hours;
  9. Russia - 142.3 million hours;
  10. Japan - 126.7 million hours

According to statistics, there are approximately equal numbers of male and female people on the planet:

  • 3.7 billion men (50.4%);
  • 3.6 billion women (49.6%).

It was found that in 2014 the number of elderly people exceeded the number of children under the age of 5 years. This is due to the fact that the number of children in families has decreased, in some families there has been a complete rejection of children, and in others, such a factor as infertility, which is increasingly progressing at the present time, played a role. The average age of a mother at the birth of a child has increased by several years since the early 1990s.

At the same time, in 2015, the number of born children was 139.3 million, and the number of deaths was 55.8 million people.

How many people live on the planet are monitored by such bodies as the UN Department of Statistics, in the Russian Federation - the Federal State Statistics Service. There are statistical bodies in every state, sometimes in every subject, region, state.

Growth of people on the planet

The growth of people on earth is determined by such a value as the natural increase (NP) of the population. This indicator is based on birth and death data and represents the difference between them. Natural growth can be both positive and negative. It is measured per 1000 inhabitants and corresponds to one tenth of a percent.

  • In 2000 with a population of 6,099,442.5 thousand, the SP was equal to 1.28%;
  • In 2005 at 6,488,139.8 thousand hours - 1.22%;
  • In 2010 6,881,527.8 thousand hours - 1.18%;
  • In 2012 7,046,317.8 thousand hours - 1.11%. This is the lowest figure in the last 40 years.

The highest rate of natural increase was in 1969. and amounted to 2.11% with the number of people 3.5 billion people. According to preliminary estimates, the growth in 2016 will be 1.15%.

The value of the SP of the population is affected by:

  1. - wars and terrorist attacks
  2. - hunger and disease
  3. - standard of living - material conditions, health care
  4. - Lifestyle
  5. - employment in hazardous industries.
