The Kyrgyz som (KGS) is the state currency of Kyrgyzstan. We can say that the som became one of the first national currencies that appeared in the post-Soviet space: the monetary unit was put into circulation by the Kyrgyz National Bank in the first half of 1993. Another feature of the Kyrgyz som is that it has the lowest cumulative level inflation among all the national currencies of the CIS in the entire history of the Commonwealth.

As of 2010s The state currency of Kyrgyzstan is represented by paper banknotes having the following denominations: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 soms. also in money circulation there is still a small number of banknotes of the previous issue series. One som consists of 100 tyiyns, which are issued in the form of coins in denominations of 10 and 50 (moreover, such banknotes are extremely rare in everyday circulation).

With what currency to go to Kyrgyzstan?

Going on a trip to Kyrgyzstan, you can safely take Russian rubles with you. On the territory of the republic, they can be both freely exchanged for local soms, and directly paid in rubles. Of course, the Russian state currency does not have an official status in Kyrgyzstan, but in small shops, markets and many other private establishments, rubles are quite readily accepted. The US dollar can also be attributed to the running currencies, which is freely changed here, and sometimes accepted for payment. Slightly less popular in Kyrgyzstan is the euro currency.

Kyrgyzstan: currency - exchange rate against the dollar

If we talk about the global dynamics of fluctuations in the exchange rate of the som against the US dollar, it can be noted that such a currency ratio remained relatively stable throughout the entire period of the existence of the Kyrgyz currency, having experienced only a few sharp jumps (including in 2008-2099 against the backdrop of the global financial crisis) . For autumn 2015 official rates exchanges were:

  • 1 US dollar equaled 66.55 KGS
  • In turn, for 1 Kyrgyz som they gave 0.02 US dollars (at the same time, respectively, 1.50 dollars for 100 KGS).

The information is provided according to the data of the Russian Central Bank.

Kyrgyzstan currency exchange

The most favorable exchange rate for rubles or another currency for soms can in most cases be found at exchange offices. Banks, as a rule, offer a less favorable RUB/KGS ratio, and the worst exchange rate is traditionally found at the airport, which is typical for most post-Soviet countries. You can also get soms at an ATM using bank card, open both in rubles and in foreign currency.

“Travelers who have already visited Kyrgyzstan often say that it does not make sense to bring dollars or euros into the country (if you first exchange rubles for them). It is easier and more profitable to travel to Kyrgyzstan with rubles.”

Course "Currency of Kyrgyzstan - ruble"

Throughout 2015, the exchange rate of the Kyrgyz national currency against the Russian ruble experienced repeated (however, not so serious) fluctuations due to the unstable economic and political situation in Russia and the world. "Peak races" occurred at the beginning of February, mid-February and the end of August.

As of September 2015, the official exchange rates of the ruble to the som and the som to the ruble were:

  • 0.99 rubles for 1 Kyrgyz som
  • 1.01 soms for 1 Russian ruble (rates of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation).

That is, as of the fall of 2015, the rates of these two currencies have stabilized and correlated almost 1 to 1.

Exchange rate in Kyrgyzstan

As in most countries, exchange rates in Kyrgyzstan may vary depending on the region, place of exchange (bank / private "exchanger") and other factors. Do not forget that when exchanging currencies at an ATM, you will encounter a higher commission compared to exchange operations in commercial outlets and bank branches. You can find out the current exchange rates of the main world currencies (including the ruble) in the Kyrgyz Republic in the "Currency exchange rates" section of the Sravni.ru project. Also, such information is available on the official website of the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan (there is a Russian version).

Currency mortgages of residents of Kyrgyzstan will be transferred to the national currency

The currency of the inhabitants of Kyrgyzstan will be transferred to national currency. This is a step of the state towards foreign currency borrowers, since with the growth of the exchange rate and the devaluation of the national currency, the timely repayment of the principal and interest has become difficult for many residents of the republic. According to Adylbek Kasymaliev, Minister of Finance, citizens of the country can take part in the program, the amount of which does not exceed $40,000. And the registration of the loan dates back to 01.07.2015.

According to analytical data on the real estate market of Kyrgyzstan, this amount is the average price for 1-2 sq. km. The exchange rate is also favorable - 62.14 soms. At the moment, the US dollar exchange rate fluctuates between 73-76 soms per 1 c.u.

Chart and forecasts for the RUBKGS exchange rate

At the moment on foreign exchange market the trend towards devaluation of the som persists.

Since the financial sector of the region is significantly influenced by the economy Russian Federation, the financial crisis in the Russian Federation caused destabilization and significant fluctuations in the exchange rate in the country. At the moment, there is some stabilization of the situation. Thus, according to the statistics on RUBKGS, the moving average over the past 30 days is unchanged - 1.0461. The growth of the ruble is expected from June 2016, the forecasted rate according to the Holt model on 14.07.2016 is 1.1417.

Dynamics of the exchange rate of the Kyrgyz som

The situation with the Kyrgyz som remains unstable. There is a devaluation of the national currency, however, the growth of inflation is also slowed down (in 2014 - 10.5%, in 2015 - 3.5%). According to the data Central Bank for 100 soms you can buy 97 rubles of the Russian Federation. By the summer, stable but insignificant growth and strengthening of the country's national currency is expected. Kyrgyzstan is one of the first post-Soviet countries to use its own currency. However, the standard of living of the population and the country's economy are still going through difficult times.

Advice from Sravni.ru: When changing currency in the street "exchangers" in Kyrgyzstan, do not forget to carefully check and count banknotes - cases of currency fraud in the country are not something out of the ordinary.

Som has become the Kyrgyz currency since 1993, some time after the collapse of the USSR. Until 1993, only the Soviet ruble was used in circulation on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.

One som includes 100 tiyn (tiyin). The Kyrgyz som is denominated only in the form of banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000 soms.

Despite the fact that in Kyrgyzstan the official currency (som) is the only possible means of payment, upon arrival in the country, you can notice that the calculation is also possible as in Russian rubles, as well as in US dollars and euros. Kyrgyzstan became the first state in the CIS, which approved its own currency.

The territory of modern Kyrgyzstan has been inhabited since ancient times. The unification of the tribes and the creation of the first state - Parkan - dates back to the 3rd century BC. At the same time, Chinese chronicles of the 2nd century BC say that the gold and silver mined in the region was used to make jewelry, and not to mint coins.

In the V century there is a transition of nomadic tribes to a settled way of life. From the middle of the 9th to the beginning of the 10th century, the Kyrgyz Khaganate covered Southern Siberia, Mongolia, Baikal, the upper reaches of the Irtysh, and part of Kashgaria. The first own Kyrgyz coins found by archaeologists belong to this period. However, in the XI-XII centuries, the ancient state fell into decay, and its possessions were reduced to Altai and Sayan.

In the 19th century, the lands of ethnic Kyrgyz became part of the Kokand Khanate. And in the second half of the same century, Russian expansion begins. In 1855-1863, the territory of modern northern Kyrgyzstan was conquered from the Kokand Khanate by the detachments of Colonel Chernyaev and became part of the Russian Empire. The final accession to Russia took place in 1876. From that moment on, the main currency for many decades was first the Russian, and then the Soviet ruble.

The Kyrgyz Republic gained its independence in 1991, and the decision to create its own national currency was made on May 10, 1993. Money was exchanged at a ratio of 200 to 1.

Today, Kyrgyzstan is one of the poorest Central Asian countries, which is still dominated by Agriculture over industry. More than a million Kyrgyz are forced to go abroad to work, primarily to Russia. Share of GDP, per capita, does not exceed 2.5 thousand US dollars, which is approximately four times lower than the level of other most successful former socialist countries. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan is rich in minerals: it exports gold, mercury, uranium, natural gas and electricity.

The economy of the republic shows extreme instability up to the present time. The country has a high external debt, a negative balance of payments. Adverse investment climate persists due to political instability.

For the spring of 2012, the exchange rate of the som is 46.9 per dollar or 62.44 per euro. 1 som can be bought for 0.64 Russian rubles. At the same time, it should be noted that no denomination was carried out in Kyrgyzstan, these quotes are not the result of “cutting off zeros”.

Thus, we can say that today the country is at the initial stage of economic transformation, its future depends on the course it will follow in the future.

As for cash currency, Kyrgyz soms can be changed at banks in central cities or at exchange offices. In many cases, market traders are willing to accept foreign currency even though it's illegal. The banking sector of Kyrgyzstan is not developed, therefore, to pay bank cards problematic.

You can find out interesting facts about its history, about the exchange rate against the ruble, and also about whether it will be easy for a tourist to exchange currency and how best to do it when traveling around Kyrgyzstan, by reading this article.

The history of the origin of the currency

Kyrgyzstan became the first country of the former USSR, which approved its national currency - the Kyrgyz som, which currently has the lowest value. The idea of its creation arose after the changes that took place in the former Soviet state. There were no agreements between them, which contributed to the introduction of their own banknotes. The currency of Kyrgyzstan is very young, the som turned 20 only in 2013. On this occasion, a landmark event was held in the republic - the celebration of the Day of the introduction of the national in the republic was issued in 4 stages, as a result of which their level of security gradually increased. A study was also conducted, as a result of which the exchange rate was chosen - 200 rubles for one som. In branches of Sberbank and in national bank exchange offices were opened, where any citizen (resident) of the republic could once exchange ruble cash. After that, the som became the only means of payment approved at the legislative level.

Why "catfish"?

The word "som" is of Turkic origin and means "ruble". The money sample of 1938 was nominally designated as “som”, and the name “tyiyn” (1 som is equal to 100 tyiyn) had small change money. Before the currency of Kyrgyzstan was introduced, many sketches of banknotes were considered, for the development of which professional artists were involved. Now sketches can be found at the National Museum of Numismatics of Kyrgyzstan. There was a commission for the selection of sketches. It's no secret that the first impression of the country is formed precisely thanks to appearance her currency.

Where can you exchange currency in Kyrgyzstan?

Currency of Kyrgyzstan - « business card» country, its unique design reflects the national color, sights and cultural heritage. The production of catfish is a creative process, which involves not only artists, but also professionals specializing in the protection of banknotes. The French and English companies are directly involved in printing the currency. When planning a trip, it is worth remembering that the currency of Kyrgyzstan, whose exchange rate against the ruble is currently 6.853 rubles. for 10 soms, is the only one legally allowed for circulation. In Kyrgyzstan, money can be changed everywhere, but the cost of the ruble in the provinces is lower than in the cities. If rubles, dollars and euros are accepted as payment, then the exchange rate will be significantly reduced.

Mobile communications, transport, accommodation and food are still cheap, especially if you travel on your own. On average, the price for one dish ranges from a dollar to two, renting a room is about 10 dollars, a ten-hour ride on a rented bus is about 160 rubles. Despite the fact that the som is the only legal means of payment in Kyrgyzstan, when paying for a hotel or organizing high-altitude tours, in some places payment is required in Russian rubles, euros or US dollars. If you intend to spend your holidays in this country and you need the currency of Kyrgyzstan, you need to remember that it is not worth the risk of changing money on the street. For this, there are points and banks that work full time. Tourism in the country is still poorly developed, but nevertheless, many people visit it in search of adventure and new experiences.
